Marlow Gates, Master Broom Maker
Marlow is a second-generation broommaker, carrying on his father’s tradition of craftsmanship in broommaking. Rumor has it that he has been tying brooms since he was 5 years old! With a degree in design from North Carolina State University, Marlow now joins his wife, Diana, in creating brooms as functional art at their studio in Big Sandy Mush, North Carolina. Their studio is an inspiring place and carries its own unique history as a general store owned and operated by many families through the years. In keeping with their stewardship of traditions, Marlow and Diana use natural materials and hand techniques that date to the 1790s. Each broom is a unique, functional piece of sculpture, incorporating traditional Appalachian strength and longevity.
